The Grillhouse, established in 1995, is one of South Africa’s premium steakhouses, offering discerning diners a combination of choice meals, a bustling club-like ambience, attentive service and a unique selection of fine wines and malts.
In 2008 the much-loved Rosebank Grillhouse acquired a sibling – an equally upmarket establishment in Sandton – and today both are regular mealtime destinations for local and international businessmen as well as being family favourites. With their art deco furnishings and subtle lighting, reminiscent of the classic New York grillhouse, the two restaurants would hold their own in any city in the world. The décor cleverly combines raw face brick, green leather seating and a generous portion of fine timber to create a warm earthy feel.
Accompanying the fine décor, the warm atmosphere and some of the finest service on offer, is a unique selection of wines and malts, adding to what we like to call “the Grillhouse experience”. Spend a little time in our wine cellar to explore the treats on offer, or relax at our hand-crafted bar and cast your eyes over our extensive malt selection.
Although we are famous for our steaks and ribs our menu caters for all tastes and includes a sumptuous selection of the freshest fish and poultry and a choice of vegetarian dishes.

Background Information on The Grillhouse & Katzy’s
In the late 1980s and early 1990s when family-style steakhouses were all the rage the owners of the Late Nite Al’s chain decided it was time for a change. After extensive travel and much research, partners Joel Katz, Saul Mervis and Peter Williams conceived the Grillhouse brand – offering lovers of top quality grilled meat their fix in an elegant, up market, adult atmosphere. In 1994 the first ‘Grillhouse’ in South Africa opened in The Firs shopping centre, adjacent to the then brand new Hyatt Hotel.
Five years later, in 1999, Joel Katz gave his name to the cigar lounge/piano bar the trio opened across the way from The Grillhouse. Katzy’s, originally intended as a comfortable area for diners waiting for tables, soon turned into a destination of its own, offering patrons the opportunity to sample some of the finest alcohols in the world – single malt whiskeys, cognacs, bourbons and ryes chosen from the largest list in the country. The combination of sophisticated spirits, fine cigars and top class live music made Katzy’s the venue of choice for Joburg’s party set.
The year after Katzy’s burst onto the social scene The Grillhouse underwent another revolutionary change with the construction of the salon area – a series of private dining rooms seating parties ranging from eight to seventy, and anything in between. The expansion included a world-class wine cellar, stocking an impressive range of local and international wines.
Once again, public demand made expansion necessary. This time it came in the form of an entirely new restaurant – The Grillhouse, Sandton, was built in 2008 in the niche Atholl Square shopping centre on Katherine Ave. Replicating, as it does, the Rosebank concept, the new Grillhouse has, in its short life, attracted a loyal following.
The major refurbishment of The Firs spurred yet another Grillhouse innovation. In July 2009 a new Katzy’s was created. Larger and more sophisticated than its predecessor, it has been purpose built to host top class live entertainment and currently offers a lineup of some of South Africa’s finest music talent. The large outdoor patio is designed to allow guests to enjoy meals from The Grillhouse while soaking up the music and vibe of Katzy’s. It is also perfect for corporate and private functions.
But it doesn’t stop there. A brand new venture, will allow lovers of The Grillhouse flavour to take the ingredients home with them and create it for themselves. The retail arm of The Grillhouse, Meat Etc, is situated in The Firs shopping centre, directly opposite the restaurant. It includes a boutique butchery, deli, an outside catering facility and a retail outlet for Grillhouse and Katzy’s branded paraphernalia.
